When the history of the current country of Indonesia is looked upon many events stand out however the true shaping forces were obvious. The first major event is one that resulted in the solidarity and unity of the indigenous people in Indonesia, although they did not choose to live together they believed that they could all consider themselves apart of one nation separate from the Dutch due to their heritage, however without the rule of the Dutch colonizing Indonesia for trade this idea along with statehood based upon boundaries not people, would not have arose. Next the outbreaks of violence against the Dutch show that many people desired freedom from this rule and the most infamous of these actions was that of the Java War that raged for five years before the Dutch tricked the Leader of the Indonesian National Forces with a false peace treaty and arrested and executed him. Rule changed hands many times over the centuries but once WW2 started the Japanese took over for military reasons, thus when the allied forces bombed Hiroshima and Nagaski in August of 1945 this set the stage for Indonesian Independence from all rule. This also led to the formation of a Declaration of Independence by Sukarno and Hatta on August 17, 1945, which is now considered Indonesian Independence day. However once the Japanese gave up control the Dutch once again attempted to move in and impose rule yet backed by the Japanese the Indonesian forces were able to fight the Dutch Army and in 1949 was granted sovereignty for the exchange of an area of Guinea and 4.3 billion guilders. Sukarno maintained power until 1976 when he was eased out by Soeharto who ruled for 32 years maintain the economy until a collapse in 1997 the before he resigned. His successor was wildly disapproved of and after bloody and violent protests in 1999 Indonesia held their first democratic election which helped shaped the nation leading to a woman and the daughter of the first President, Sukarno, to be elected making her only the fourth woman every to lead a predominantly Muslim country.
